What’s the worst that can happen?
By Leigh Hunt on September 1st, 2007
I recently came across a great tip for overcoming fear of action in the Four Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferris (a must read!). You’ll find it a particularly useful exercise if you’ve got a burning ambition to start a business but are being held back by fear and crippling ‘what if’s’.
If there’s a particular action you need or want to take, but are fearful of the outcome, ask yourself, ‘What’s the worst that can happen?’ If the worse case scenario is not life threatening, then should you really be afraid? I doubt it.
The truth is, if you have the right mindset you can bounce back from any worse case scenario a better person. I’d wager that once you look at it from this angle you’ll be surprised how all of a sudden fear dissipates.
If you quit your job and start a business, what’s the worse that can happen? Probably, the worse case scenario is that the business doesn’t thrive and you have to get another job. Is this life threatening? No. Will you learn from the experience and grow as a person? Yes! And that’s the worse case scenario. Chances are it’ll never happen, not if you move forward without fear.
But then who says you have to quit your job to start a business anyway? There’s plenty of research, preparation and action you can take before saying goodbye to your regular pay cheque. And most of it will only take time. Don’t have time? If it’s something you really want to do, you’ll find time. Imagine all the hours saved by not watching Big Brother alone!
So, what’s the worst that can happen by researching your business idea, and taking steps to make it happen?
