The Future is Female
By Leigh Hunt on May 22nd, 2007
In the words of Ian Pearson, Futurologist for BT, ‘the future is female’! Well, we could have told him that
But seriously, I’ve stumbled across yet another interesting article on the BBC website here about the future of the economy.
It touches upon the different skills men and women bring to the workforce. Men tend to be more analytical (some might argue intellectual), whereas women, on the whole, are more emotional.
The article mentions how jobs from the ‘information economy’ we’ve being living in for the past few decades have been dwindling. Software continues to develop and become more powerful, replacing the need for human interaction in consultative jobs, more traditionally filled by men. The article puts forward the notion that caring professions are the future for our workforce. After all, jobs that exist to care for and support us can never be replaced by machines (can they????).
When it comes to caring and communication, women do tend to have the edge. So, does the future represent a complete shift from a male to female dominated economy? Perhaps......
Personally, I can already see a shift to more traditionally feminine values in business, particularly smaller business. Getting closer to the consumer is a fantastic way for smaller businesses to compete with large faceless corporations. You could argue that Web 2.0, with it’s blogs and wiki’s, has come into being to satisfy the female desire for connections and community.
Until recently, websites for business were produced for the sole purpose of showcasing products or services and displaying information. Now more businesses are connecting with their customers and clients, encouraging interaction. ‘ Corporate’ blogs are popping up everywhere, and when was the last time you came across an online store where you couldn’t write a review? Women are starting to be recognised for the force we are in this economy, and I for one welcome this recognition with open arms!
What do you think?
