Does business planning scare you?
By Leigh Hunt on May 24th, 2007
I don’t mind saying, it used to scare me!
When you’re setting up your home based business it’s inevitable that at some point you’re going to need to write a business plan. I mean, how are you going to reach your destination unless you know the route you need to take to get there?
However, don’t be fooled into thinking that your business plan needs to exceed War and Peace in content, especially if you have no intention of seeking outside funding for your business. My business coach helped me realise that, above all else, your business plan is for YOU. If you can’t relate to it, and it doesn’t encourage you to move forward in your venture, it’s next to useless.
I used to try and follow business plan templates (there are loads on the net). But I knew something wasn’t right when I’d continually start new ones that would quickly be relegated to some dusty old folder on my desktop, never to be seen again. It just wasn’t working. I needed a way to create a business plan that had real meaning for me.
I came across this home business site today, based in America (as so many of them are) and I think its author hits the nail on the head. Before you can even think about writing a business plan you must first write a life plan.
What are your reasons for wanting to start a home based business? My guess is that you want to create a certain kind of lifestyle. So, ask yourself, what kind of life do YOU want to be leading? Only then will you know how you can plan to achieve it with your business.
This home business site has some great life planning tips.
Our main purpose in life is to live, not to work!
Happy life planning

But if working can feel like ‘living’ also because you love your job, then you are on to a real winner!
I’m sure running Lotus is very rewarding, if only my sister in law had an Internet connection (I know, she’s living the dark ages) I’d direct her right here.

How very true! I think this is an extremely important comment made by Amanda. Thanks
A great definition of ‘work/life balance’ is one where work and life ‘live together in perrrrrfect harmony....’ all together now!
